Valmiki goes to extreme extend of charactering a person. Sometimes just 1 
word is only available to show ones character. Unless one is hyper alert it will be missed. Kausalya being a miser is one such. Manthara when she sees the people of Ayodya in jubilant mood asks a house maid what is happening and why Kausalya the miser is doing lavish charity
The word is ‘अर्थपरा सती”. Many Preachers omit such nuances in character due to hero worshiping of Rama. But in the process they bring the great epic of Ramayana from its high pedestal of Greatest work.

Perhaps, you should explain the deeper meaning of Sanskrit slokas to the benefit of everyone. This would help to give clear picture of what you try to portray.
Dont be so scarred about sanskrit. Go to Valmikiramayana.net and see the word by word meaning.If you are Indian many of our languages have common word. With little bit of effort you can find wrong translations. Otherwise we have checked the meaning before incorporating. Only in one place we found an error (2-55-33).The translation has an error the word चेरतु means roamed not ate hence it should read roamed in the river forest of Yamuna.
